ONLINE INTEREST & PEER GROUPS FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN & TEENS

GROVE runs online interest‑based peer groups for Autistic children and young people to build friendships, connect through shared interests and feel genuinely understood in a neuro‑affirming, entirely Autistic space.  GROVE’s Mentors are all Autistic and are autism specialists ensuring we are at the cutting-edge of neuro-affirming practice.

WHY ONLINE CLUBS FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN MATTER

Friendship, connection, and shared interests are central to the wellbeing of Autistic children and young people. Online interest‑based peer groups provide a safe space for young people to meet others who understand them, explore hobbies and passions, and form friendships in a way that feels comfortable and authentic. Unlike traditional social skills groups, these sessions focus on connection through shared interests, not “fixing” social behaviour. By participating in these groups, young people can build confidence, feel understood, and strengthen their sense of belonging within a neuro‑affirming community.

WHO GROVE'S GROUPS ARE FOR

Our online interest groups are designed for Autistic children and teens who want to connect with peers in a safe, inclusive and understanding space. You do not need a formal diagnosis – self-identification is fully supported. We welcome young people who are looking for friendship, shared activities and opportunities to explore their interests alongside peers who understand their experience. Each group is structured by age range and interests.  We are based in the UK but young people from across the globe can join!

WHAT MAKES GROVE'S GROUPS UNIQUE & NEURO-AFFIRMING

GROVE groups are Autistic‑led and neuro-affirming, which means our Mentors bring both lived experience and specialist knowledge to every session. We prioritise low-demand approaches, embracing all forms of communication and anti-behaviourist practice, so young people can engage in ways that feel right for them. These groups are not social skills or intervention-based; instead, they provide space for exploration, reflection, and authentic connection. Each session is tailored to the interests and needs of the participants, making GROVE groups a truly unique and supportive experience for Autistic children and young people.

HOW GROVE'S GROUPS WORK

We create our groups around what young people actually want. Below you’ll find a list of groups currently running and also themes we could create groups on with enough demand.

If your Autistic young person would enjoy connecting with others around a shared interest and/or experience, please submit an Expression of Interest for the relevant theme below. If you can’t find a theme they would like, please feel free to suggest something new using this form.

Once enough people express interest in a theme, we’ll match them by age and needs and form a group. We will be in touch if and when that happens but feel free to email for an update at any point.

We are based in the UK but young people worldwide are welcome to join our groups!

COST

  • Full-price space if the group is funded via an EHCP / professionally in any capacity (including by personal budget when a parent/carer pays using LA funds): £25 per 1 hour session
  • Discounted spaces for parents/carers self-funding: £15 per 1 hour session (prices reduced accordingly for 30 or 45 minute groups)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What age range do your interest groups support?

Our groups are designed for Autistic children and young people age 8-18, please check each group listing for suggested age ranges. Under 8s can join too if the format suits!

Do I need a formal autism diagnosis?

No – self‑identification, awaiting assessment is sufficient to take part but young people must be aware of this.

What kinds of interests are included?

Please see the giant list below of groups we current have running (Science, Pokemon, Drama, Animals, Dragons, Reptiles) and those we are able to create with enough demand.

Do we have to have cameras on?

No – this is optional once we have verified ID for safeguarding purposes.

Are these social skills groups?

No – these are interest‑based peer connection groups, not social skills training. Our approach is neuro‑affirming, not behaviourist.

My child won’t talk or do activities – is that ok? And I don’t think they will sit for an hour!

Absolutely fine! Young people are welcome to observe, do their own thing and participate in any way that feels comfortable for them. We won’t sit still for an hour either, your young person will see their Mentors stimming and fidgeting and we’ll validate that need to do what our bodies and minds need to be comfortable. Some of our groups are 30 or 45 minutes too.

Who are the Mentors?

All GROVE’s Mentors are Autistic and therefore bring lived experience. The team includes Mentors with PGCertsBAsMAsPhDs in autism as well as people who speak, write and train on autism internationally. Meet the team here.

How do you support PDA young people?

We take a low-demand, invitational approach in all sessions. Content and activities are adapted for flexibility, giving young people genuine autonomy and agency in their choice to engage in ways that feel safe and comfortable. We focus on support rather than pressure, helping young people feel included without creating anxiety or resistance. Most of the young people in our groups so far are PDA’ers!

How many young people are in a group?

Between 4 – 8, with 1 or 2 Autistic Mentors – groups with GROVE are small and that’s one of the things that makes it so impactful and unique.

Are these groups suitable for EOTAS / EOTIS?

Yes! They are an excellent provision to include in an EOTAS / EOTIS package as they prioritise social connection in authentic ways. We are registered with a range of Local Authorities – please email Jess on jess@gr0ve.org to discuss. We find writing a personalised letter of recommendation based on the EHCP helps.

Are there any other ways to fund the groups?

Yes! We discount our group costs for self-funding parents/carers and have some young people funded via ‘short breaks’, their DLA. Reach out to Jess if you want to chat about bidding for other funding you find and she will arrange a letter of recommendation.

Are these groups for home educated children?

Yes! But not exclusively, any young person is welcome to join – just check the times suit you.

How are interest-based groups different to BEING ME?

Autistic children join BEING ME to understand autism and build confidence in who they are, many then enjoy GROVE interest-based groups as ongoing, fun social spaces to connect around shared interests. We also find many young people benefit from individual mentoring after BEING ME in order to continue to deepen their understanding and benefit from ongoing, personalised support.

All our supportive approaches complement each other beautifully:

BEING ME → identity & understanding

INTEREST-BASED GROUPS → ongoing peer connection

MENTORING → ongoing, 121, deeply personalised support

Why aren’t these groups £2 or £3 like some other online groups?

Many other online groups may run with 20+ young people in each session and often resell recordings to others. GROVE groups are different: we keep sessions small and highly supported, typically 4–8 young people with 1 or 2 Autistic Mentors who are paid fairly for their work (frankly there are enough Autistic people unable to work – we were not going to add to that!). This personalised approach is one of the things that makes our groups so impactful and unique.

The cost reflects the specialist training, lived experience, preparation, and care that our Mentors put into every session, as well as the tailored, neuro-affirming environment we provide. We never resell session recordings, so your young person’s privacy and participation are fully respected.

How do we book?

If the group is already running you can either complete an expression of interest for that group or email Jess directly on jess@gr0ve.org. If it is not yet running, please complete and expression of interest – we then form groups based on demand and matching up age groups.

    TELL US YOUR IDEAS!

If you don’t see a group theme you think your young person would enjoy, please share your ideas below and we will look at what we can do!

    GENERAL INFORMATION

    How do I book?

Enquire directly by emailing jess@gr0ve.org or complete an expression of interest using the link on the group you want. If it’s a group that is already running we’ll let you know if there is space, if it’s a potential new group then we’ll see if we can create one based on demand.

Does my young person need a diagnosis to attend?

No, we welcome Autistic young people who are awaiting assessment and self-identified as Autistic. It is essential that your young person knows they are or may be Autistic though.

Are these groups only for Autistic young people?

    At the moment, yes

How long do the groups run for?

Most of our groups run without an end date and with pre-arranged breaks. Once your person has a place, they keep that place for as long as they want it (subject to Terms and Conditions).

    What happens after I book?

Once we have enough bookings to start the group then you will receive an email to notify you along with an invoice. Until that time, feel free to reach out for an update and please share details of our groups far and wide!

Before the group starts you’ll be sent our GROVE Group Guide with all the information needed to join.

How do I pay? And what does it cost?

Invoices will be sent once we have enough bookings to run and will be sent monthly thereafter.

A full-price space is £25 per session and that is charged if the group is funded via an EHCP / professionally in any capacity (including by personal budget when a parent/carer pays using LA funds), if a parent/carer is self-funding we discount that to £15 per session

    Can we have a trial?

As we re-book monthly, your first month is like a trial anyway – you are not committed beyond that and if it’s not working out for your young person you can give up their space at that point.  We can arrange single trial sessions for established groups – just give Jess a shout on jess@gr0ve.org

How can I book a session that is funded by an EHCP / EOTAS / EOTIS, personal budget or any other professional means?

It’s no different if you have a personal budget – just go ahead and get in touch.

If you need us to invoice someone else and already have agreement for funding, you can email Jess on jess@gr0ve.org to reserve a space.

Please do not book until you have LA agreement for funding – if you need help with that we are happy to write personalised letters of recommendation using EHCP targets/outcomes, just email to enquire.
